...I think that one of the reasons Yamamoto bores me so badly is that, for me, his battles are so boring to watch and I generally think his opponents are more interesting than he is (e.g. Squalo and with the giant glaring exception of Genkishi, that pompous bastard).
Yamamoto's fights are always a lot of sword-waving and waves of water and all his moves look the same to me. Not to mention that he fell into the same trap as Genkishi: thinking that having more swords gives you the upper hand. That, and the learning kendo in a week. I hate that for the same reason I can't stand Kaho in La Corda d'Oro: LEARNING THINGS DOES NOT WORK LIKE THAT. I HAVE DONE SWORD FIGHTING AND HAVE HAD MUSIC LESSONS. YOU MIGHT BE BORN WITH TALENT BUT THAT DOES NOT GIVE YOU A CONVENIENT SHORTCUT. UUUUUUGH.
well. that and the 'flawless and invincible sword style'. i hate that so much. so much.
See, Squalo is also a swordsman and he has far less (shown) moves than Yamamoto, but Squalo is hilarious when fighting. Yamamoto is not (unless running into walls and no, he will never live that down).
And Hibari is also sort of godmode but it bothers me less because it's tied up in Hibari's entire personality. Hibari is nothing more than violence on legs. And his battles are often drawn so much more fluidly, and he openly enjoys it all like he enjoys nothing else. That's what makes Hibari a more bearable type of godmode than Yamamoto. YMMV, of course.
Ryohei's battles are often visually less interesting (unless he's punching dinosaurs) but Ryohei is such a lively character that it's nice to watch anyway. Being a walking shirtless scene when battling is just a nice bonus.
Lambo... is just awesome because any character who can deep-fry several dinosaurs at once while crying 'MAMAAA' at the top of his voice can do no wrong.
Chrome is... I want Chrome to fight more and Mukuro to fight less. I think that Chrome's best moment is when the Millefiore guards found out she had invaded their base while disguised as one of their own, and she lets the illusion go while knocking one of the guards out. As for the ongoing arc, I want Chrome to GET OUT OF DODGE, RIGHT NOW. Julie is such a creeper. Why does Chrome always get the creepy opponents, with the probable exception of Mammon, who might not be a creeper but who still used tentacles (I love that one theory that Mammon used to use barbed wire instead of tentacles but that it proved to be a detriment when restraining Bel and so he switched over to something less likely to make people bleed).
Tsuna's battles are often rather boring, because he tends to end everything with an X-Burner to the face. The best thing about Tsuna battles are his DyingWill!bedroom eyes.
And finishing with Gokudera of course, because he's my favourite. That is one reason why I think his battles are more interesting (even if he almost always loses, sob sob), but also because he has several different moves that are visually very different as well. The Sistema C.A.I. is of course a fan favourite, but all the bullets have other effects and get used for other situations (like most people I like the Cloud bullets the best. There's just something about that 'oh this looks totally harmless, right? LOL NO' that appeals to me). I can't wait to see how his new gear works. New flame combinations, plz?
That said, I think KHR battles in general aren't very engagingly written (I constantly wonder why no one gets shot in the back while posturing or expositioning). In that case I like YuYu Hakusho better, simply because there's a lot of posturing and expositioning then too, but at least everyone has oodles of fun blowing each other up and it might be a life-or-death situation but you wouldn't know it from looking at them. They take everything much less seriously.
One of these days I really should start reading HunterxHunter
