Proving, once again, that I really suck at writing groups and engaging dialogue.

Fandom: Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis
Characters: really the whole party, but mostly Vayne, Jess, Nikki and Roxis. Just picture them taking a breather in the middle of a school assignment.
No spoilers, unless you think a battle skill counts as one.
No pairings.

“Jess, what… what exactly is this?” Vayne hesitantly stretched out his hand, examining what looked to be a lollipop. It was round and a bit sticky, its colours a swirl of different yellows with some sort of white and blue eye-shaped blob in the middle. It even had a little white paper stick. It looked, to all appearances, like a normal lollipop.

However, it had also come out of Jess’ bag, and Vayne knew better than to trust Jess to have harmless food with her. You never knew if she’d tampered with it.

“Oh, that?” Jess was smiling much too innocently for it to be non-lethal. Vayne carefully lowered his hand, not about to put the… whatever it was, but definitely not a lollipop, or at least not a safe one… into his mouth. “It’s a candy eye. Look, do you see the thing in the middle? The shapes there form an eye. So that’s why it’s called that.”

“Ah,” Vayne said, inspecting the lollipop again. “And… how exactly did you get it? I know the shop in the Resource Centre sells candy, but I’ve never seen this one.”

“Oh, no, it’s not from the shop.” Jess rummaged in her bag again, pulling out several vials with a strange thick honey-coloured liquid (knowing Jess, it was not real honey), some potion flasks, a few books, some of Flay’s old swords and… a few ceramic plates with food on them, shaped in the form of a puppy’s paw, complete with sweet-smelling frosting and little leafy decorations on the side.

Vayne opened his mouth to ask how exactly she’d managed to carry that in her bag without getting the food smeared all over everything else inside, but then thought better of it. Best not to test Muppy’s space ship theory. His school life was strange enough already.

Nikki mumbled something incomprehensible around her own candy, only pulling it out when Roxis kicked her sharply against her ankle. “Meow,” she said, glaring. “What was that for?” When Roxis just gave her an angry look back, she turned to Jess again. “So, where exactly did you get it if it wasn’t from the shop? I didn’t think the cafeteria sold sweets.”

Roxis sniffed. “That’s because students are expected to make their own,” he said haughtily. “And if you weren’t satisfied with what we have in the workshop nobody’s stopping you from making some yourself.”

Nikki bared her fangs at him. “You never make fish or steak,” she said sulkily. “And nobody lets me close to the cauldron. I always have to go find some myself.”

Before Roxis could say something utterly caustic and everything degenerated into a brawl, Vayne hastily cut in with a, “So! Ah, Jess, the candy?”

“Oh, yes!” Jess beamed at him. “I got it from the Cliones, Dryads and Moon Flowers at the Millennium Tree. They are the best sources for it there. Of course, there are lots and lots of other monsters that can also be converted to candy though the vanilla syrup is pretty hard to come by…”

She said more, but by that point Vayne had tuned her out in favour of staring at the lollipop in his hand. That was a monster?!

Nikki quickly spat out her own candy and Anna, who had been on the verge of picking up some chocolate in a swirly purple wrapper, immediately retracted her hand.

“Jess,” Flay said, slowly lowering his hand, a half-eaten fish-shaped sweet-that-was-actually-a-monster thing held carefully between his sticky fingers, “these things are all from monsters we fought?”

Their healer nodded happily. “Yeah! Sometimes, if they’re close to death I can let my bag eat them and then they turn to candy! Cool, huh?” She bit with gusto into a cookie.

Vayne shuddered. Nikki and Anna looked faintly green.

“Aaah, it’s not fair!” Pamela suddenly cried out from just behind Roxis’ shoulder, who went deathly pale and immediately ducked away, hand going reflexively to his deck. “It’s not fair! I can’t eat it!”

“You…” Nikki dragged one hand over a tree, fingers curled so the bark got stuck under her claw-like nails, making a stifled mewling sound in her throat. “You want to eat it? It’s all monster bits! Who knows where it’s been!”

Roxis muttered something sounding suspiciously like ‘look who’s talking’ under his breath, but it was overshadowed by Pamela’s high, plaintive voice. “Of course! It’s so cute! Just think about it, all those monsters squashed together mercilessly in those tiny shapes, unable to move but still feeling everything, until they’re completely chewed down! Cute, so cute!”

Vayne swallowed carefully, not looking down at the lollipop in his hand. Nikki had one hand pressed to her mouth. Anna looked like she was going to throw up.

“Whatever,” Roxis said. “It’s candy and that’s good enough for me. Pass me one of those cookies, will you?”

Jess' Funny Pouch skill converts monsters to different types of candy when used as the killing blow. Also, I'm convinced Roxis eats anything when it contains sufficient amounts of sugar. He can make ridiculous amounts of cheesecake in one week. Or any kind of synthable sweet, really. While Nikki's good with fish, meat and vegetables but most people send her out gathering instead of synthing.

Also, Pamela's ideas of 'cute' are sort of horrifying.
